Here's the new rig, fresh from Rotorua Rockshop. The pictures are damned dark, due to crappy camera, and the fact that my bedroom is actually very dark.
It's a 5-piece in Fusion sizes (22"x18" kick, 14"x5.5" snare, 10"x8", 12"x9" rack toms, 14"x11" floor tom mounted on ride stand.)
The hardware on this thing is very very sturdy, and with the Resin ball joints, memory locks and other very customizable options on the stands and tom holders, it's very versatile as well. The finish is Tobacco fade, which is only really evident in the pics of the snare. The other 2 are just there for reference to how I've set it up. The extra floor tom there (16"x16"), is the silver floor tom from my Ashton kit. I've got it there in the meantime, until I can order a 16"x16" from Mapex. The cymbals are *cough-Paiste 302s-cough*, and with a bit of luck and hard work, I should have some nice Sabian AAX's on there in the near (distant) future. I've also got a 9" Zildjian Oriental Trash/Splash on the way, a Trademe win at an irresistible price. Now, excuse my babbling, the pics!

Nice kit. Already seen the snare in the snare forum. But yeah...sounds like a really good setup. Nice cymbals too.

No, I'm not dissing...Paiste's are nice...I have 302's myself, and you know what, after 6 years, they're growing on me...or maybe my hearing has just gone downhill far enough for me not to notice.

Okay, so I'm not going crazy! The hats are really beginning to get old on me. They're just too...noisy..no musicality to them, and I can't get a nice clear 'chick' out of them, or a nice open sound. But, the ride..I dunno what's wrong with me (or you for that matter!! ), but the ride and crash cymbals have actually grown on me alot. Call me weird. It's actually my birth-name.

Cool stuff - you must be feeling pretty pleased with the new kit!

I always get a sort of high when I get new drumming gear (even if it's just a pair of sticks ).

The reason why I can stand them is 'cos I have great earplugs. They cut out all the ugly high frequencies, makes them a bit darker and mellower. But without the earplugs I have to agree. The hi-hats are just too noisy...maybe as some trash-effects-hats, but not as a main hat. The ride is alright...a tad gongy...and the crash is just too small for me (I prefer 18" or upwards). But hey, they're alright for beginners, and after 6 years you get used to it, and they possibly age some so that'll help the sound.

Yeah, that's right Jonas.
Oh hell yeah Jay! It's an awesome feeling, I was so buzzed on the way back from Rotorua last night. I couldn't wait to get home, haha .
But yeah, with the memory locks, setup is a breeze, and I lined up all of the toms nicely, and my Ashton 16" floor slotted in there nicely. Soundwise, the mahogany tone is evident, but with the right tuning it sounds damned sweet with the rest of the kit. I chucked an Evans Power Center head on that snare and boy does it sing! loving the extra 2 inches in the kick drum width too, more punch and boom!

Ah - I was wondering about that - I actually went back to the top of your post to check you said it came with one floor tom, not two

I know the feeling of just wanting to get home and break in new gear

I think I might need a "gear fix" soon - some sticks should do it

Do let us know how long the balls last. I have seen many a ball joint destroyed, the actual ball get munted as from having the joint tightened onto it. hence i would NEVER use such hardware.

oh well, nice choice man, now just get the Rock sizes, and you will be set. 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, 18, 22, 24, and then a 14X5.5 and a 14X6.5. everything youll be needin for quite some time, and some you wont.

I have to agree with Kak. I don't like the ball mounts either. I much prefer Pearl's mounting hardware to anything else on the market. I find it's far more reliable...but hey, whatever floats your boat. And the kit itself is still very, very nice.

just examine how the joint tightens. some have the rod going onto the ball itself, this is bad as the rod digs in. if the rod is to the side, and so it clamps the whole thing down, its not as bad. so if yorue lucky, you shouldnt have problems any time soon. also, dpending on the quality of the ball, it wont happen for a while (obviously the top line stuff uses a better compund)

All of mine have the tightening rod going to the side of the ball, and it seems the ball is pretty damned solid, nothing soft that's gonna be ripped into for a while.

Man, I haven't been on enough recently!

One pages and one post before I even get my chance -
Great kit man! Congrats! Bet you're loving it. Do tell if you're ever gigging around the welly area with it! I'd love to come and listen!

What's a Pro-M again? You said something about mahogony? Is it a 100% mahogany kit or what?

new Pro-M kits are maple, the mahogany is the ashton. its not ACTUAL African Mahogany, its Phillipine something, only called mahogany because the grain looks the same, and has a low fundamental pitch, like mahogany. actual African Mahogany sounds better though.

maple/ basswood? i cant remember, Mapex have long been a company that didnt quite use the normal woods (top line kits were always maple and cherry or walnut, never straight maple). they are more traditional these days, doing straight maple etc.
